Try it!
Have you ever actually judged your own goats(livestock)? It is a blast to do by your self or with your friends or family.
take pictures, and enjoy it. Right down how you placed them and put the paper in a "remembered" spot so that you
can go back to it.
A simple milk substitute,
1 egg
1 cup powdered milk
3 cups room temp. water
1/4 cup whipping cream
Another milk substitute,
1 gallon whole milk
1 can evaporated (unsweetened) milk
1 cup buttermilk with live culture
I've been told that both of these work great!
Enterotoxemia, a terrible disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium perfringins that may be related to some milk replacer
formulas. We recently lost two kids and all the symptoms pointed to enterotoxemia -
Here is some advice that I received from a knowledgeable breeder about enterotoxemia - "We have all lost kids to
enterotoxemia before. It is usually our best/favorite goats, too. It is hard to believe that any creature that is so vital
and happy one minute can be dead the next, but that is how quickly it happens. If you see something (diarrhea, off food, hunching,
or whatever) to indicate that there is a GI problem, it is always good to treat it the way you tried (i.e., treatment for
bloat), and also to treat prophylactically for enterotoxemia. The treatment you did will NOT touch enterotox, but is fine
for bloat or GI upset, and may stop the problem right there, before it progresses further. But by the time the goat is crying
in pain (and this is not a normal cry...more like the "I am being killed" cry), refusing to move, and/or laying
down, much more aggressive treatment is needed. First off, give some Banamine IM (normal kid dose would be about 1/4 - 1/2
cc, depending on weight) to reduce the fever and inflammation as well as easing the pain. Next, give liberal doses of CD antitoxin.
I think the treatment dose for a kid is 5 - 8 ccs. The CD antitoxin is, to me, the most vital medication that any goat owner
should have in their medicine cabinet. I keep big jugs of it. I am not talking about the vaccine/toxoid, but the dark-colored
antitoxin. It is the only thing that will reverse a case of enterotoxemia.
It does not matter if the kid was vaccinated with CDT, though it does seem to provide protection for older goats. With
the kids, unless they have had the full regimen (Mom vaccinated a month before kidding, then the kids get boostered at around
9 weeks and then again 3 weeks later), they are not immune. The clostridials multiply so quickly that they can be out of control
within an hour or two. So that is why it is good to have the antitoxin for kids. It does also confer a short-term (about a
week) protection if given at prevention doses...so there are some folks who give it to young kids. I don't...but I treat very
aggressively at the first sign of stomach upset. Since I have started doing that, I have not lost a kid." - Kim
For people using powdered milk kid replacer: Many milk replacer products are soy based, not milk based. The protein is
there, but it may be hard for them to digest. If you have a choice, try to use the milk based powder or milk based recipes.
